ALLIANCE FUNDS: SOCIO-ENVIRONMENTAL SUPPORT CENTER – (CASA)
BRAZIL

History

CASA was launched in 2004 by the Global Greengrants Brazil Advisory Board.

By 2004, the Brazilian advisors had made nearly 100 grants across the country and had a track record for reaching small groups that had little chance to access other funding. They had seen firsthand how small grants to diverse social and environmental efforts in every state of Brazil were making a critical difference. The Board established CASA to increase this support for the social environmental movement.

Purpose

CASA seeks to promote dignity and justice, and to improve the quality of life, by strengthening civil society organizations in Brazil and the region. It also works to promote democratic control over governmental and economic institutions, and to bring issues of social, environmental and economic sustainability into the forefront of public policy.

Grantmaking

CASA makes small grants from ($500 to $5000) to grassroots social and environmental initiatives in Brazil. With these grants, CASA seeks to help grassroots groups spearhead strategic approaches for the protection of threatened ecosystems and the resolution of staggering social inequities.

Support

CASA is a member of the Greengrants Alliance of Funds. It has received support from the Global Greengrants Fund, the C.S. Mott Foundation, the World Conservation Union (IUCN) and other national and international donors. In 2006, CASA seeks to raise and distribute over $150,000 in grant funds to groups in all states of Brazil.
