GREENGRANTS ALLIANCE OF FUNDS: THE SAMDHANA INSTITUTE, INDONESIA
History
At the request of the Global Greengrants Southeast Asia Advisory Board, the Samdhana Institute became a member of the Greengrants Alliance of Funds in 2004. This transition was made possible by the Board's record of successful grantmaking since 2001.
Purpose
Samdhana, which means a peaceful coming together in Sanskrit, is working to support a strong environmental community across Southeast Asia. It administers an expanding program of small grants, and also provides fellowships, retreats and other support activities aimed at strengthening and rejuvenating those who work in conservation and development organizations.
Grantmaking
Samdhana focuses on individuals and groups that work for equitable access and control over natural resources with specific emphasis on community or village-based resource management projects, individual and institutional capacity building, and recovery and renewal programs in conflict areas. Samdhana is making grants in Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia and the Philippines and may, over time, expand to other countries of the region.
Support
Samdhana is a member of the Greengrants Alliance of Funds. It has received support from the Global Greengrants Fund, the United Kingdom Department of International Development and other local and international donors. In 2006, Samdhana distributed close to $200,000 to groups across Southeast Asia.
