Protecting Displaced Slum Populations

Since May 2006, more than 150 slums in Delhi, India have been demolished under government pretenses of transforming India's capital into a clean and more cosmopolitan "world city." Local organizations such as the Hazards Centre, a Greengrants grantee, are fighting for the rights and livelihoods of displaced slum populations. Despite the widespread media portrayal of India's booming economy, organizations like the Hazards Centre are using research and activism to bring attention to the populations who are left out and negatively impacted by India's effort to become one of the world's largest economic powers.

A Struggle Between Sustainable Development In Agriculture And Large-Scale Mining

A social dynamic emerged in the communities of Cotacachi Ecuador. People of the same area were concerned with the impact that the mining would have, both socially and environmentally. So a process of assemblies and workshops began and an alliance formed with Accion Ecologica, a national institution focused on defending the environment and ecology that was accompanying this dynamic. Soon there was the need to convoke other allies, so that everyone could come together in the strategy of defense for the territory against the mining - but always with the communities as the main actors in the Intag region.

DIRECTOR'S CORNER

Greetings all,
When I started Greengrants out of my house in 1993, I planned for an organization that would help create change through empowering people on the ground in the Global South to create sustainable livelihoods, build democracies and protect communities as well as our planet. The idea of nearly 700 grants in 80 countries at that time might have sent my mind reeling. But, indeed, now 15 years later, that is what Greengrants has become. And while I'm not one for reminiscing, I am incredibly excited to celebrate this marker in our organization's history.

Fortunately, even while we pause to celebrate, things continue to change. In this issue, Juan Pablo Muoz from Ecuador, who recently joined our Andes Board, gives us some background on the recent success in the Intag region, where mining concessions were revoked by the federal government. We also welcome three other new advisors to our network--Mutuso Dhliwayo has joined our Southern Africa Board; Sophie Kutegeka and Clarence Kipobota have joined our East Africa Board. The Hazard Centre, an India grantee, is featured in a compelling article that educates us about displaced slum communities in Delhi.

Here in Boulder, things are changing too. For the last few months, we have been examining our organizational structure and culture as a part of a longer term strategic plan. This process has helped me to put into action something that I knew in my gut for several years. It's time for me to focus less on the internal workings of the organization and more on developing longer term strategies and external relationships to strengthen our network, raise more funds and further help to change our world.

We're still working out the exact details of my new role, but I'll be actively engaged in the evolution of Greengrants moving forward. We're planning to begin looking for a new Executive Director this spring who will work with me and the staff to make Greengrants an even stronger and more effective advocate for citizen groups creating movements for environmental justice in the Global South. This transition is incredibly exciting for me, and indeed for all the staff.

I hope you'll celebrate it - the entire anniversary, the challenge and the change - with me.

Warm wishes,

Chet
