They will speak at the Barrick Gold AGM meeting in Canada, partner with like-minded organizations and authorities, and communicate the issues to both government representatives and members of the media.

Purpose: To strategize around the highly damaging Solwara 1 deep sea mining project within the Bismark Sea and wider Pacific Regio. This project is potentially the precursor to a larger number of similar mines, and the group intends to partner with likeminded organizations to campaign against them.

Purpose: To support and expand efforts to reforest mangroves. The group will work local community members, raise awareness of the harm of overharvesting mangroves, and monitor new mangrove plantations.

Funds will be used to train community members on patrolling and using GPS for better monitoring of development projects on their traditional lands and reporting violations as unsustainable development can lead to deforestation and pollution thereby having negative impacts on both land and marine ecosystems.

Funds will also be used to purchase office equipment for the organization, which will expose the impacts of the oil palm industry as oil palm plantations lead to the deforestation of native species which can increase the settlement of sediment into marine and coastal habitats, as well as add to climate change thereby permanently changing marine and coastal habitats.

Purpose: To raise environmental awareness among local youth and enable their active participation in environmental issues. Funds will support activities for children and parents during the school break, environmental and cultural lessons, including land and marine conservation, video shows, drama, cultural festival, quizzes and debate as well as a tree planting initiative at the school and nearby villages.

Purpose: To conduct organizational capacity building and community awareness activities for the sustainable management of Papua New Guinea's natural resources. In particular, funds will enable activities surrounding climate change, carbon trading, and health issues.

The association works to encourage the sustainable development of the Yaparingan community and to foster an appreciation for the conservation of the area’s abundant natural resources.

Purpose: To support a district wide climate change awareness campaign in an effort to encourage clans in the Obura Wanenara District to set aside tracts of untouched forest for conservation purposes and to take advantage of international climate change funding opportunities. Activities include creating and distributing informational brochures, purchasing audio visual equipment, buying a generator, and covering travel costs.

Purpose: To enable Forum's staff lawyer to participate in the annual Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide conference, in order to learn from other public interest and environmental lawyers. This organization is pursuing legal action to ensure compliance with existing forest management legislation.

Purpose: To register the organization as a legal entity so that it can legitimately represent local communities in their efforts to protect the Sepik River from environmental contamination that would be caused by the development of an open pit gold and copper mine at the river's headwaters. Activities include purchasing office supplies, setting up a small office, and organizing a workshop aimed at mobilizing and unifying Sepik River communities.

Purpose: To hire a consultant to help create a baseline survey of the economic viability of reef and fishery resources in the Community Based Fisheries Management Area. The report will be used in a national court case against a company charged with illegal fishing in the area.

Purpose: To conduct a one week turtle tagging and monitoring workshop; to invite marine biology expert to facilitate this workshop; and to teach beach rangers how to tag, monitor, collect, record, and share this information with other nature protection groups in Papua New Guinea. The efforts will contribute to turtle conservation programs in the North Coast and Rai Coast of Madang Province.

Purpose: To conduct a one-week, local awareness program on natural resource management and land conservation. Funds will also be used to collaborate with the provincial government on obtaining protected status for designated lands, and to work with local organizations and government representatives on developing a Strategic Plan for the AW Youth Group.

Purpose: To plant mangroves (50,000 seedlings to be purchased from the local nursery) and conduct an awareness campaign to address overharvesting of mangroves for firewood. The organization will also establish a team to regularly monitor new mangrove plantations.

Purpose: Ailan Awareness seeks to strengthen the capacity of coastal communities to manage marine resources and to protect marine biodiversity in and around New Ireland, an island surrounded by coral reefs, mangrove forests, and untouched beaches. This grant provides general support for the organization.

This organization was established in Koroko Village to maintain and strengthen the local culture, which has enabled community members to live in harmony with their land and environment for generations.

Purpose: To build a community learning center that will support environmental awareness building and serve as a location to train members in sustainable resource management. This association was established to empower community members and clan groups in the Ijivitari District of Oro Province.

Purpose: To develop a business plan for a training center and ecotourism project, and to install audio visual equipment in the center. This institute was established in Babaka Village to improve and enhance the livelihoods of community members, through activities that promote local culture and gender equality.

Purpose: To support community development and biodiversity protection initiatives in the Karimui district of Simbu Province, an area with high numbers of endemic, threatened rainforest species. Meetings will be held with landowners and other stakeholders to establish management committees, and baseline data will be established to aid in measuring project efficacy.

The mission of this organization is to enable people to better manage their natural resources and to build the capacity of local decision-makers.

This community-based tribal organization was initiated to protect Ogayo tribal land and resources, and to promote sustainable development initiatives.

Purpose: In April of 2006, a mining company's helicopter accidentally dropped its cargo of toxic chemicals while it was on the way to the Tolukuma gold mine, causing widespread environmental damage. This grant supports an investigation of the site and a meeting with company officials about the practice of transporting hazardous materials by helicopter.

Purpose: CEPCH assists rural village communities in Papua New Guinea's Manus Province. This particular grant will support them in protecting traditional ways of managing the environment there, while promoting community eco-enterprise and development activities.
