Purpose: To increase the groups' capacity to protect communities in Mixto and Chinautla affected by climate change and improve their quality of life, health, and economy. The group aims to improve these municipalities' degraded environments by advocating for the enforcement or creation of enviromental laws and holding authorities accountable for the environmental damage.

Purpose: To improve the group's work on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) preparedness. The group will organize a field trip to Leon and develop research to strengthen the base of its work.

Purpose: To teach local community members how to present folklore on the radio to promote environmental protection. The group will organize workshops for 20 participants who will then present their adaptations of stories promoting Mother Nature and the connection between the environment and humans.

Purpose: To raise awareness in Chiantla about clean energy and small hydroelectric projects (less than 15 mw). As the municipality works to install hydropower stations along the local rivers, the group will research and prepare information and develop a radio program.

Purpose: To support the group's ongoing efforts to conserve 69 acres of sacred sites, forests, and natural resources in Totonicapan. These activities include workshops on forest and water management, as well as restoring ecological trails and reforestation. Additionally, the group will help a women's project working on climate change adaptation.

Purpose: To help the local community protect their 97-hectare community forest by developing school activities and workshops addressing forest and water management and climate change. The group will also improve local ecological trails and pay for project management and supplies.

Purpose: To support collective coffee, citrus, and avocado production, through which the group promotes sustainable social development. The funds will be used to clean and prune or dehusk 12.57 hectares of coffee, 8.38 hectares of avocado, and 9.08 hectares of citrus. The group will also support workers in the coffee mill, cut 600 bushels of coffee, and purchase 400 bushels of fertilizer.

Purpose: To reinitiate discussions about indigenous rights and needs among Guatemalan indigenous communities, which are organizing to resist the construction of a mega-hydroelectric dam project proposed by ENEL--a multinational company. Because the multinational company is resisting conversations, the communities must promote their position nationally and internationally. Funds will be used to help community representatives travel to Europe to raise awareness both at the Alternative World Water Forum in France and to ENEL directly.

Purpose: To increase public and media awareness of Guatemala's Pacific Coast's mangrove ecosystem and its degradation. For the Day of the Mangrove, the group will organize a press conference and several events in Camperico to reforest mangrove areas, start educational presentations in local schools, and print 3,000 pamphlets with information about the day and actions people can take to protect the mangroves.

Purpose: To continue a forest management program and value-added activities certified under the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). The group will extend the time specialists work with youth and women's group to develop skills in responsible wood processing.

Purpose: To maintain and reforest the Coyolate River banks through educational events. The group will raise awareness about the threats to and importance of the river by organizing 6 talks at educational establishments, creating educational materials, developing a video about river's social and ecological importance, and putting together 4 reforestation projects with endangered native species.

Purpose: To strengthen the capacity of local women of Lik Luna. The group will establish a small-scale dairy farm, hold trainings on processing dairy products, and produce organic compost from manure.

Purpose: To help local farmers boost crop yields with sustainable agroecological farming methods. The group will increase the communities it works with and strengthen its capacity by hiring a part-time staff member.

Purpose: To engage community members in communal forest conservation and management. Asociación de Miembros de la Aldea Vásquez will plan and implement forest management and climate change mitigation and adaptation workshops in surrounding communities, host environmental education events in eleven local schools, and purchase basic surveillance equipment to support the control and monitoring of the forest and water resources.

Purpose: To protect indigenous and rural lands from the expanding extractive industry in Guatemala. Funds will be used to organize a 'peasant congress' of organizations and communities in eastern Guatemala that will analyze the impacts of extractive projects on the environment and surrounding communities, and to develop a plan for enforcing their territorial and communal rights.

Purpose: To preserve and improve the only source of water in Aldea Rincón, Guatemala by raising awareness and initiating conservation projects. Funds will be used to purchase land for the protection of the water, forest, and ecosystem as well as support local workshops and lectures regarding environmental issues and possible solutions.

Purpose: To help indigenous women advocate for public policies that support biodiversity, protected areas, and climate change. The funds will be used to organize three workshops in Izabal, Alta Verapaz, and Chimaltenango to develop the agenda for Indigenous Women and Climate Change; design a publication that will list the principle proposals generated from these workshops; and organize a public forum for the presentation of the agenda.

Purpose: To contribute to the sustainable development of rural Guatemala. Funds will be used to organize a seminar for 60 participants of rural communities to discuss the injustices of electoral campaigns and political leaders who defy agricultural workers.

Purpose: To assist the agricultural community of San Rafael in organizing against a mine proposed by the San Rafael mining company. They will organize 15 workshops to educate residents of San Rafael and other municipalities in Santa Rosa on the negative impacts of mining, organize four peaceful demonstrations in these areas, publish a newspaper, and monitor the contamination of the river.

Purpose: To help strengthen and protect systems of management, land control, and natural resources for the communities in Ciénaga Grande, Guatemala. Funds will be used to support meetings with authorities, build capacity for advocacy, and develop conflict resolution workshops.

Purpose: To protect and restore the coastal ecosystems in the Southern Pacific region of Guatemala through environmental education initiatives, ecological recovery, legal processes, and local participation in Champerico. Funds will be used for experiential exchanges between communities and to support Mangrove recovery projects.

Purpose: To help Mayan populations and indigenous communities in Guatemala increase their standard of living and protect the surrounding environment. The funds will be used to support Saqb'e Moloj Mayab's efforts to influence the National Council of Protected Areas' ruling on the proposal to create an Indigenous Management category of resource protection, as well as to support the implementation of a number of workshops and public awareness campaigns in surrounding communities.

Purpose: To create a unified market for organic produce in Guatemala. Specifically, Fundación Carlos Martínez Duran will use the funds to hire a contractor to map rural organizations throughout the country that grow organic produce and disseminate the findings of the study.

Purpose: To help formulate strategies to defend indigenous territories in Guatemalan communities, particularly the Maya-Ixil community which has been affected by social reconstruction and internal conflict. Funds will sponsor several workshops involving indigenous authorities and will focus on envisioning the future of indigenous territories with an official publication to document and wrap up the series.

Purpose: To promote the conservation and sustainable management of natural resources in Guatemala. Funds will be used to support the attendees of the National Forestry Congress and their efforts to network, share experiences and strategies, and strengthen organizational capacity.

Purpose: To incorporate local communities in the development and implementation of a sustainable model of forest management in Guatemala. Two hundred community leaders will be brought together to document and discuss local challenges such as land speculation, the expansion of the agricultural frontier, tourism, cattle ranching, and biofuel production.

Purpose: To create more sustainable land-use systems in Aguacateco, Guatemala. Funds will be used for an agro-forestry project conducted by a women's group that will cover an area of 3,969 square meters; the results will be published and presented to other social organizations.

Purpose: To help organize a presentation to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) regarding the current unjust situation of indigenous lands, territories, and communities in Guatemala which are suffering from lack of food, resources, and displacement. Funds will be used to cover staff time for research and writing, as well as the publication of the document that will be presented.

Purpose: To protect and conserve the communal forests of Juchnep, Guatemala through the legal process to bring justice to communities that are impacted by the logging companies. Greengrants' funding will be used to organize informational meetings, create and disseminate educational materials for community members, purchase office equipment, and help pay for the legal expenses in cases against logging companies.

Purpose: To promote environmental consciousness in urban communities in Guatemala city. Funds will be used to establish an environmental library, to initiate a reforestation program, and to organize workshops for community members on topics related to the environment.

Purpose: To care for, protect, and conserve the 69 acres of forest, water resources, and sacred archeological sites of the Maa K'iche'. The group will organize campaigns for reforestation, pruning, forest thinning, and environmental education.

Purpose: To encourage the development of communities' participation in the Quiche territory against the threat of national and transnational companies that exploit the territory's natural resources such as forests, sacred mountains, and water. Funds will be used to organize workshops on national and international environmental laws, such as the Council of Communities of Cumen, as well as to promote a good faith community consultation.

Purpose: To support integral development of the Uspantan community in Guatemala. Funds will be used to cover the renewal costs of a small-scale hydroelectric project including repairing several sections of ditches, removing water leaks, and protecting and replanting trees in the area.

Purpose: To organize awareness-raising workshops for community leaders and schools on environmental issues in order to gain the commitment of communities to conserve, protect and restore their environment. Current environmental campaigns include the dissemination of information (pamphlets, movies, radio spots, public libraries) regarding mining and the transversal highway of the north (Franja Transveral del Norte); the building of community libraries; the implementation of reforestation projects affected by the highway's construction; and the effective monitoring of the construction to assure communities that the environmental impact assessment is being followed and the rights of communities are being respected.

Purpose: To promote the human rights of the Maya Mam culture, especially the right to self-determination and to environmental well-being. Funds will be used to organize a march of more than 700 people from the communities of San Miguel Ixhuacan against Montana mining company to support their legal case of human rights violations.

Purpose: To influence public policies that address sustainable human development and encourage community participation in Antigua, Guatemala. Specifically, an event will be held to raise community awareness related to forest management.

Purpose: To develop a common agenda for forest management in Central America. Funds will be used organize a workshop for Central American community leaders and forestry experts and to cover costs associated with transportation.

Purpose: To support a campaign to inform municipal officials, government authorities, social organizations, community leaders, and business owners about the important roles that the Selegua River plays in preventing the spread of disease, maintaining the health of the area’s flora and fauna, and providing irrigation for agriculture. Activities include a media campaign, forums, environmental education campaigns for area youth, and awareness raising workshops.

Purpose: To enable communities to secure collective rights to lands and natural resources. The organization will carry out a legal review and analysis of Guatemala's national land registry process and then frame a legal strategy for communities.

Purpose: To send a member of Ulew Che Ja to the 16th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Specifically, funds will be used for transportation, accommodation, and various other costs associated with attending the meeting.

Purpose: To build the organization's capacity, from governance to distinctive programmatic areas, in an effort to better prepare them to manage the impacts of large-scale mining and hydroelectric projects and protect community land, especially the Visis Cabá protected area in Quiché. The organizaton seeks to plan and implement programs and projects in the areas of health, education, production, policy and infrastructure with a focus on cultural preservation and income equity in the country's Ixil region.

Purpose: To organize an awareness raising campaign about the negative impacts of large-scale hydroelectric projects in the area around Pinares. Funds will also be used to create and disseminate information in Qèqchi about the impacts of large dams.

Purpose: To organize a reforestation and environmental project in an area damaged by illegal trash dumps. The organization will involve youth by coordinating a painting project of a wall surrounding and protecting a ravine in the same area.

Purpose: To conduct an analysis of the influence the campesino movement has had on sustainable agriculture and an analysis of the impacts of climate change on agriculture and the environment. Additionally, funds will be used to develop political strategies for the Campesino a Campesino movement in the face of the Political Agenda of the Agricultural Ministries of Central America, to hold national and regional meetings and to publish and disseminate informational material.

Purpose: To support a reforestation project in the Coyolate and Madre Viaje watersheds. Funds will be used to purchase 13,000 tree saplings; to organize workshops about environmental issues; and to produce and disseminate informational material for youth and other community members in the area.

Purpose: To raise awareness of the effects of climate change and climate change policies on forest communities. Funds will be used for six members of the organization to participate in events parallel to the 16th Conference of the Parties in Cancun.

Purpose: To ensure the protection of indigenous and campesino communities' collective land tenure. The organization will develop a methodology for recognizing communal lands within a new land registry process developed by the Guatemalan government, and will then implement that methodology on a pilot basis with a community in the Ch'orti area.

Purpose: To organize marine and coastal environmental education activities for fisherman, schools, and communities along the southern coast. Additionally, the group will strengthen the management of organization to include more members.

Purpose: To do chemical and bacterial analysis and monitoring of 21 potable water systems, and to organize a workshop about the management and administration of water sources. The association implements reforestation and environmental education projects to conserve a healthy watershed.

Purpose: To establish a model of organic food production that will use environmental-friendly products and to construct greenhouses that will be used to grow oyster mushrooms for both consumption and sale. Additionally, funds will be used to strengthen the capacity of the organization.

Purpose: To educate local community members about their rights and responsibilities as Guatemalan citizens, specifically focusing on the environment. Additionally, funds will be used to organize forums and workshops to better integrate the different Community Development Councils in the Chuarruancho area, as well as develop and print informational materials about environmental rights and the need to conserve and protect natural resources.

Purpose: To organize and implement a campaign aimed at raising community awareness about the impacts of the Marlín gold mine in the San Miguel Ixtahuacán municipality. A team of experts will travel to individual communities in San Miguel to organize informative talks and meetings about the mine.

Purpose: To protect and manage mangrove ecosystems and disseminate information to new members of the organization. Additional activities include organizing environmental education activities in schools in coastal communities of Southern Guatemala.

Purpose: To hold workshops about local coffee seed selection and production, establish six seed banks, and design and print informational pamphlets on three different topics. The organization seeks to improve the productivity of coffee being grown by organization members in order to guarantee they can sell their crop at best market prices.

Purpose: To help cover the costs of organizing an international conference in Antigua, Guatemala that will focus on mining issues in Latin American. The conference has three objectives: (1) to raise the level of awareness about these issues; (2) to stimulate dialogue between countries and organizations; and (3) to develop local, regional, national and international strategies and actions.

Purpose: To conduct five evaluations investigating the socio-environmental impacts of the proposed Xalala hydroelectric project. Additional activities include holding workshops on GPS technology, community mapping, and assessing biodiversity in the area.

Purpose: To organize an awareness building campaign on the importance of defending and protecting Huehuetenango against the exploitation of open-pit mining and mega dam projects, using documentary video, film forums, and radio spots. Additionally the campaign will focus on the importance of environmental education.

Purpose: To support the hiring of a lawyer to defend a priest associated with the organization, who has been falsely accused of conspiring and motivating small rural farmers to rebel against the government. Additional activities include distributing t-shirts, hats, and posters to raise awareness about the issue.

Purpose: To conduct a study that will monitor and inventory bees in La Gloria’s community nature reserve. The results of the study will then be used as an indicator of the health of la Gloria’s cloud forest, which is currently threatened by a proposed hydroelectric project.

Purpose: To organize and host ten capacity building workshops for seventeen communities in the Ixil region of Guatemala, in order to educate community members about their environmental rights and give them the tools necessary to defend their communities from national and transnational megaprojects that are proposed in the area.

Purpose: To help cover the costs of organizing an international conference in Antigua, Guatemala that will focus on mining issues in Latin American. The conference has three objectives: (1) to raise the level of awareness about these issues; (2) to stimulate dialogue between countries and organizations; and (3) to develop local, regional, national and international strategies and actions.

Purpose: To host three grand assemblies to discuss the problems faced in defending water rights and resisting dams on the Usumacina, Pasión and Salinas rivers. Additionally, funds will be used to create and disseminate informational pamphlets to local communities about the impacts and consequences of large-scale dam projects.

Purpose: To organize environmental education workshops for 45 parishes in Jalapa Jutiapa that will raise awareness about mining projects in the area. Additionally, funds will be used to organize visits to communities in the areas that have been affected by mines.

Purpose: To design and hold a workshop that focuses on water administration and management for the 21 water committee members of this organization . This organization seeks to promote community-based conservation of forests and watersheds in the region.

Purpose: To establish seven community gardens that will include traditional medicinal plants. This association seeks to contribute to the sustainable development of the rural communities in Cantón Chiquix Nahualá Sololá, which are primarily of Mayan descent.

Purpose: To produce and distribute two issues of El Observador: one of which will cover the subject of energy policy, and the other will focus on mining. Additionally, funds will be used to organize two workshops on the formation, deliberation and analysis of energy and mining policy.

Purpose: To raise awareness about the possible implications of mining and large dam projects in the Chorti territory along the Copan River. Specifically, funds will be used to begin a community learning exchange, to develop a map of the Chorti territory, and to host workshops for community leaders about mines, hydroelectric megaprojects and economic alternatives.

Purpose: To organize workshops for community leaders and local authorities to raise awareness about mining and proposed hydroelectric projects on land of the Maya Chorti community, and economic alternatives to these development projects. Additionally, funds will be used to organize workshops about identity, territory, and food sovereignty.

Purpose: To build community capacity to campaign effectively against the mining industry. The group will build awareness about the experiences and positive achievements of communities involved in a similar campaign in Huehuetenango.

Purpose: To support this organization in promoting ecotourism activities; specifically, to promote a marine ecotourism project. Funds will purchase a boat and gas for tourist services, and develop marketing materials.

Purpose: To support this organization in promoting ecotourism activities in the Lake Izabal area. Activities include developing marketing and promotional materials, a website, and organizing capacity building workshops.

Purpose: To support agroforestry and reforestation projects, including tree nurseries, as well as for general organizational capacity building. This organization seeks to promote sustainable development by offering services and products that are in line with the principles of conservation and sustainable development.

Purpose: To hold a workshop about environmental and cultural conservation; activities include games and theatrical performances. This is an indigenous association made up of ecotourism guides in the San Juan La Laguna region.

Purpose: To evaluate a series of tourism projects carried out by this organization over the last few years. The results will be compiled into a document that will serve as a resource for the organization, visitors, and potential funders.

Purpose: To establish a tourist information office with a focus on indigenous community tourism and cultural destinations. Founded by the Cackchiqueles communities who fled during Guatemala's internal conflict period, this organization seeks to conserve the environment and strengthen the Mayan culture.

Purpose: To host a training and strategy session for people most affected by pesticide use to educate them about environmental health impacts and alternative options. This organization works to promote sustainable development for indigenous communities throughout the country.

Purpose: To produce and distribute a magazine that discusses the outcomes of the Americas Social Forum, with a focus on food security and sustainable development. This organization supports grassroots groups through technical support, providing information, and organizing community trainings.

Purpose: To hold exchanges with other indigenous communities in Guatemala to share learning about community-based conservation; and to complete a new management plan for the Itza Biosphere. This organization is comprised of Maya Itza descendants and seeks to preserve their cultural identity and sustainably manage their natural resources.

Purpose: To increase the capacity of local communities to address the impacts of the mining in El Estor, including land use conflicts. Mining companies are increasing their activities in the area and threatening local residents' livelihoods.

Purpose: To create a strategic plan to guide the organization in thinking through its goals for promoting sustainable forest management in the Maya Biosphere Reserve in Peten. This region faces significant challenges, including illegal logging and ranching, and is a biodiversity hotspot.

Purpose: To strengthen organizational capacity and design a strategic plan. As a result, the organization will be able to improve its work with organic cacao farmers, many of whom had to abandon their farms after recent hurricanes.

Purpose: To hold a workshop during the American Social Forum that will be take place in Guatemala. The workshop will focus on the failure of governments in supporting rural agricultural economies, and will build on the experience of this organization in rural Guatemala and Mexico.

Purpose: To enable eight rural community leaders to participate in the National Forestry Congress of Guatemala. These leaders will share their valuable experience and knowledge in forestry management, with the goal of replicating this work in other communities.

Purpose: To monitor the shrimping industry in Champerico and to report any environmental or human rights violations to the authorities. This area is home to key mangrove forests, which sustain the vulnerable ecology of the region and provide livelihoods for local people.

Purpose: To implement an education program for 15 groups of Q'eqchi women in El Estor, most of whom do not speak Spanish and have limited education. As part of the program, women will learn skills to generate sustainable income through handicraft production.

Purpose: To hold workshops on soil recuperation, forest management, and composting for agricultural communities. This organization's mission is to transfer knowledge, technology, and financial resources to community groups to improve their quality of life in a sustainable manner.

Purpose: To increase awareness and build capacity among indigenous communities impacted by detrimental environmental practices; specifically, this campaign focuses on mineral concessions in the Sipakapense territory. Activities include holding workshops and roundtables with indigenous communities and producing radio spots.

Purpose: This association aims to improve the market competitiveness of the organic cultivation of cacao, with the goal of both conserving the environment and reducing rural poverty. This grant will enable the association to officially register as a legal entity, to create a strategic plan for future action, and to initiate dialogue with several municipalities along the southern coast of Guatemala.

Purpose: To patrol vulnerable mangrove areas to prevent illegal activities; and to educate coastal community leaders about the laws that protect their resources and the importance of coastal ecosystems. AVEDICHAMP aims to protect, conserve, and restore the Guatemalan coastal ecosystems in the Southern Pacific region of the country.

Purpose: To fund scholarships for the participation of 20 people in the fourth annual Latin American and Caribbean Conference of Producers and Researchers in Organic Agriculture. The conference will include presentations by national and international speakers, field visits, and workshops on various issues around organic agriculture.

Purpose: To assist small-scale organic coffee producers in increasing the efficiency and effectiveness in the production and commercialization of their product. Specifically, funds will construct a small store and cover the costs of the necessary agricultural and technological materials to increase production and sales.

Purpose: To recuperate the natural vegetation in the region of Santiago Atitlan from the effects of Hurricane Stan. The focus of this effort is on reforestation, which will control erosion and improve the quality and quantity of potable water for communities in the area.

Purpose: To replant deforested areas with native tree species of cultural and ecological importance; and to hold a workshop with community leaders to train them in forest conservation. This Association works with rural communities in the municipality of Totonicapan to promote healthy forests, with the primary goals of providing safe drinking water.

Purpose: To educate communities in Huehuetenango about the environmental impacts of open pit mining, with the goal of promoting community-based activism and resource management. Because communication infrastructure is week in the area, a series of radio announcements and community visits will be used to spread the message to the affected communities.

Purpose: To print and distribute a book about peasant resistance to the usurpation of land rights. The mission of this organization is work with community representatives to protect and defend the natural environment of Guatemala.

Purpose: To promote sustainable and organic agriculture for local farmers, in order to counter the negative effects of non-organic fertilizers and the Green Revolution. Activities include producing radio spots to promote the program and inviting local elders to teach children about traditional agriculture methods.

Purpose: To support an organic agriculture campaign as follow-up to the experiences gained at the Second Latin American Conference on Organic Agriculture. Activities include distributing 3,000 copies of a magazine on organic agriculture throughout the country.

Purpose: To support three aspects of this organization's work to protect the environment surrounding the Las Granadillas Mountains: soil conservation; seed and plant protection; and water conservation. Activities include workshops with local communities, capacity-building sessions for community members, and producing educational materials about the importance of conserving this area.

Purpose: To enable the leaders of this association to travel to an international meeting on rain forest conservation, where they will be able to share their efforts in Guatemala and learn from the experiences of others. The goal of ACOFOP is to incorporate local communities' voices in the development and implementation of a sustainable development model for managing the Maya Biosphere Reserve in Peten.

Purpose: To fund a multi-media campaign --including TV, radio, posters, and printed materials -- to protect and conserve Chichoj Lake. That lake is threatened by pollution, and by the resulting proliferation of several invasive plant species.

Purpose: To support a series of leadership workshops in five different communities of the Alitlán river basin. This is part of a larger effort to promote cultural and biological diversity in the Mesoamerican region.

Purpose: Círculo Ambiental promotes the sustainable use of natural resources to improve the lives of people in the western region of Nicaragua. This grant will support work to identify the principal Green Areas that exist within the City of Quetzaltenango, and to outline the impacts of infrastructure projects near these areas.

Purpose: To support a campaign to ensure that indigenous people are consulted and their rights are upheld in respect to their natural resources. Activities include awareness-building workshops for the general population, meetings with local mayors and civil employees, and presentation of the group's concerns to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.

Purpose: To fund a campaign to protect endangered Guatemalan fir trees (pinabete) from being cut illegally to be used as Christmas trees in Guatemala City. The organization will work to protect the pinabete by transporting and strategically locating 50 monitors in forests of Tontonicapan department between November 23 and December 23.

Purpose: To fund a training seminar for community leaders, focusing on leadership skills and sustainable agriculture practices.
