Purpose: To raise the Villa Pizarreño community awareness of the health and environmental damage they have been exposed to through asbestos. Incidence of illness and death due to asbestos is increased in this community, yet they have received no reparation from the government or responsible companies. The group intends to bring the community together with experts in a variety of related fields and victims from other communities to raise the issue's visibility, provide a space to share experiences, and to develop stronger relationships with like-minded institutions and organizations.

Purpose: To contribute to the conservation and management of biodiversity while aiding Chile's disaster recovery. Funds will be used to support artisan fishing communities in Las Cruces and Las Trancas in defining policies that favor resilience and innovative processes in managing natural marine resources.

Purpose: To help members diversify their production and income, which has become particularly stressed as marine resources in the area has decreased, as well as repair damages its office sustained during the tsunami in February 2010. The group will work with the women's collective and repair and enhance the office space. Additionally, it will organize workshops on the preparation and handling of traditional and nontraditional dishes and sustainable management of marine resources, environment, and pollution.

Purpose: To improve income generation methods in Tubul Cove that had been adversely impacted by February 2010 tsunami. The group will repair their headquarters to properly conduct aquaculture trainings for the community.

Purpose: To help rural and urban communities better understand and advocate for sustainable development. The group will hold workshops within the communities on current unsustainable practices - such as large monoculture operations - and help identify ways in which the communities can work together to create change.

Purpose: To continue developing a management plan for the conservation of vital coastal areas of interest, including the Islotes de Ahuanco. This location is the breeding grounds for the Humboldt and Magellan penguins and contains an abundance of clam banks. The group will develop a participatory process in the plan to contribute to the long term goals of coastal management in Chepu.

Purpose: To conserve and restore local wetlands. The Kennedy Foundation for the Conservation of Wetlands will carry out a community awareness program in Algarrobo, Chile, conduct an evaluation of the community's perception of the wetlands, implement wetlands education programs, and develop training programs for conservation.

Purpose: To strengthen the Alliance of Coastal Municipalities for Sustainable Development, which the organization coordinates. Funds will be used to draft governing documents, participate in public forums, develop conservation activities, host workshops, and create a conservation proposal to present to the Parks and Biodiversity Department of Chile.

Purpose: To ensure the conservation of species in the Tamango National reserve by developing environmental education and communication activities with the communities and other organizations around the reserve. Funds will support the making of a photography class, produce environmentally oriented drawings of the reserve, organize an ecological bike ride to raise awareness on environmental issues, and specifically address the danger of extinction of a native deer that is the symbol of the community.

Purpose: To develop reports regarding the environmental, social, cultural, and economic impacts of landfills and water treatment plants in Mapuche communities in the Araucanía region of Chile. Funds will be used to gather the results and share them with community leaders.

Purpose: To support sustainable development alternatives in the Chilean Aysen region. Funds will be used to collect and disseminate information about the negative impacts of mega-hydroelectric dam projects on tourism and natural resources, as well as describe sustainable tourism alternatives.

Purpose: To facilitate the recovery of the artisan oyster industry in Boyeruca from the recent earthquake and tsunami. Funds will support geological and topographical studies of the region and will help the union purchase new equipment.

Purpose: To raise awareness about the negative impacts of five mega hydro-electric dam projects on the Aysen River in Chile. Funds will be used to develop an information and environmental education campaign, to support communication between relevant stakeholders, and for reinstallation of the group's television signaling equipment.

Purpose: To prevent corrupt mining practices in Chile, in which companies are pressuring communities and colluding with the government to gain mining contracts. Funds will be used to analyze and document past mining projects, create an educational manual, and host a workshop with community leaders in Valle del Huasco, Totoral, and Valle del Choapa.

Purpose: To protect the natural marine resources of the Lakfenche communities in Carahue territories and enable the communities to protect the resources, themselves. The funds will be used to host workshops and community meetings, prepare a management plan for specific areas, and hold four other trainings that will address leadership development and conflict resolution.

Purpose: To strengthen the environmental network in northern Chile, from Arica to Valparaíso. The organization will meet with leaders of current networks in Puerto Huasco, develop a campaign to disseminate information on environmental issues, strengthen leaders' knowledge of water issues, and develop new strategies to build the network.

Purpose: To promote democracy through fortification of civil rights and liberties and transparency of state institutions. Funds will be used to gather information and produce weekly news reports about the health sovereignty of local communities, the defense of human and environmental rights, and how industrial breeding, mining, and fishing is negatively affecting the indigenous local communities.

Purpose: To support and facilitate the participation of citizens and communities in the protection, restoration, and preservation of the environment from the damaging effects of extractive industries, large-scale dams, and other forms of water and land pollution in northern Chile. Funds will be used to support the annual meeting of Observatorio de Conflictos Mineros en America Latina where mining resistance strategies will be shared with like-minded organizations throughout Latin America.

Purpose: To defend the Aisén region of Chilean Patagonia from large hydroelectric projects. The group will send representatives to the third annual Rivers for Life meeting to share campaign strategies, learn about alternative options for sustainable development, and build networks with similar movements.

Purpose: To organize a meeting of communities who have faced or may face dangers from thermoelectric plants, with the goal of enabling these communities to better influence energy policies at the regional and national level. Funds will be used to bring stakeholders together to share experiences and strategies around the serious environmental and social risks associated with the thermoelectric plants, especially with regard to climate change.

Purpose: To develop a participatory land-use plan for the coast, beaches and wetlands of Chepu, which is threatened by the expansion of tourism, sport fishing, and hunting. The grant will be used to map the area; organize workshops to engage community members in the plan's development; and provide the community with educational pamphlets and a map of the area.

Purpose: To assist in developing a joint recovery plan of the small fishing cooperatives on Mocha Island, whose infrastructure was wiped out by the February 2010 tsunami in Chile. The cooperatives will reorganize themselves and purchase equipment for artisanal fishing.

Purpose: To help the organization recover from the damages it incurred from the earthquake and resulting tsunamis that devastated parts of Chile in February 2010. The organization works to conserve and preserve the biodiversity of Chile’s Juan Fernandez Archipelago.

Purpose: To oppose the human and environmental rights violations of transnational mining corporations by supporting inter-regional cooperation among activists. Funds will support a meeting between organizations and communities to share experiences and strategies and to strengthen participants' capacity to exercise their rights.

Purpose: To fund the economic recovery of those in the community of Matanzas, Chile, who were affected by the 2010 Tsunami. Funds will be used to rebuild the community and to purchase fishing equipment that was lost.

Purpose: To rebuild the artisanal fishing infrastructure of a community-managed marine protected area that was destroyed in the February 2010 tsunami. Specifically, funds will be used to purchase diving suits, longlines, ropes and life vests.

Purpose: To develop a recuperation plan for the Estero de Pichidangui wetland, which has been seriously deteriorated by overuse. Specifically, funds will be used to develop social and environmental expectations; to organize environmental education and capacity building workshops; and to ensure multi-sector participation.

Purpose: To continue the organization's campaign for a GMO Free Chile that was launched in 2009 with Global Greengrants' support. The organization will track the emerging GMO legislation; strengthen the Network for a Chile Free of GMO's; organize an event with farmers to exchange traditional seeds; and create a national digital registry of traditional seeds and plant variety in Chile.

Purpose: To create a book that demonstrates the organization's over the last 10 years, including a general overview of the themes the newssource addressed, and articles written by correspondents and partners. Mapuexpress promotes unity of the Mapuche communities throughout Chile by gathering, compiling, and distributing pertinent information and current news to rural communities that do not have access to other information sources.

Purpose: To organize a three-day environmental fair that will address issues such as conservation, ecotourism, and alternative energy. The group will organize a cooking contest using natural and local ingredients as well as environmentally-themed art contests.

Purpose: To fund the economic recovery of those in Puertecillos, Chile, who were affected by the 2010 tsunami. The tsunami wiped out the entire community, and funds will be used to assist those who lost homes and fishing equipment.

Purpose: To mobilize the citizens of Los Molles to conserve and restore the costal wetland through promotional materials, organized clean-up days, and documentation of wetland protection. The wetland has become a garbage dump and faces a threat of being filled for new construction.

Purpose: To repair boats that were damaged and to replace two boats that were destroyed in the February 2010 tsunami in Chile. The group works to conserve the traditional method of transport on Lake Cahuil by keeping the association's boats in good condition and by ensuring the security of their property and equitable distribution of natural resources.

Purpose: To organize three trawünes, or meetings, that will bring together Mapuche leaders from the Los Ríos del Sur region of Chile to learn about Article 6 of the Indigenous and Tribal Peoples Convention, which outlines a community or group’s right to participate in decision-making processes that may affect them directly. The meetings aim to ensure active participation in debates surrounding proposed development projects - such as large-scale hydroelectric dams - on Mapuche territories.

Purpose: To develop an educational book, titled "Colors of the Forest, Colors of Life," for students to learn about the biodiversity in their region. Specifically the book will contain pictures of some of the most relevant species of the Maulino forest in Chile.

Purpose: To send two representatives from the Mapuche community to a meeting of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination in Geneva, Switzerland. Specifically, the representatives will discuss the negative impacts that chemical water treatment plants have had on their lives and livelihoods.

Purpose: To create and disseminate information aimed at generating awareness around the environmental consequences of large-scale dam projects in Aysén. Additionally, funds will be used to educate people about sustainable alternatives to dams through talks, forums and festivals that will be open to the general public.

Purpose: To revive the Network for a Chile Free of Genetically Modified Organisms which has not met in two yeas. Specifically, funds will be used to organize two meetings for the network's members to exchange ideas and to organize seminars to create educational materials to circulate the results of the foundation's study on contamination of genetically modified corn in Chile's VI region.

Purpose: To raise awareness around the proposed hydroelectric projects on the Achibueno River through educational materials and organized meetings with local community members and national politicians and authorities. This area is one of the last watersheds in the Maule Region that still has no roads, making it one of the last that is free from major development.

Purpose: To build knowledge about climate change impacts, including the desertification and drought. The organization will organize a series of awareness-building seminars in communities throughout the country and design a collective strategy to address these issues.

Purpose: To support community-based natural resource management programs in the Juan Fernandez Archipelago. Funds will support staff and infrastructure to be able to advance with these programs.

Purpose: To support indigenous Mapuche communities in denouncing the Chilean government for repeated instances of environmental racism, specifically the impacts of landfills and waste-treatment plans located by these poor communities. Activities include holding community meetings about the issues, promoting media coverage, and distributing findings from the organization's research.

Purpose: To develop and implement an ecotourism project in the Mapuche peoples’ protected coastal area of San Juan de la Costa. The organization will encourage Mapuche divers to lead underwater eco-tours to reduce overfishing while promoting alternative income sources.

Purpose: To build awareness about the negative socio-environmental impacts of proposed dam construction by the Hidroaysen Corporation in southern Patagonia. Activities include distributing information, producing radio spots, and traveling to work with likeminded organizations in the region.

Purpose: To implement an environmental education initiative to build awareness of the pre-Andes mountain range zone of Santiago. Elementary schools from five communities will participate, and the program will culminate in a public exposition of environmental awareness art created by the students.

Purpose: To enable a Mapuche representative to attend a meeting of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, in Geneva, Switzerland. The goal is to make a formal complaint of environmental racism, related to chemical water treatment plants built on indigenous lands in southern Chile.

Purpose: To hold a series of meetings for community members to strategize about defending their lands from a pipeline proposed by a cellulose company. These communities are indigenous Mapuche Lafquenche and hold fishing rights for the area threatened by waste from the proposed pipeline.

Purpose: For general capacity-building support for this organization, which works to protect the coast of Chile, including coastal biodiversity and marine life. Activities include creating a new website to raise the organization's profile.

Purpose: To hold a series of panel discussions to educate communities about the importance of conserving regional wetlands. The group will also design and implement a sustainable development plan for communities within the Nilahue estuary and Cahuil Lake ecosystem.

Purpose: To implement an environmental education initiative to build awareness of the pre-Andes mountain range zone of Santiago. Elementary schools from five communities will participate, and the program will culminate in a public exposition of environmental awareness art created by the students.

Purpose: To develop and implement a local ecotourism project. Activities include mapping a trail with GPS, labeling habitats, and producing a field guide to this protected coastal area.

Purpose: To initiate a dialogue between the community and two companies planning to commercially develop a priority environmental conservation site. The organization will also file a formal complaint with the Chilean Environmental Protection Agency.

Purpose: To build awareness about the socio-environmental impacts of dam construction throughout Patagonian Chile. In an event titled 'Cavalcade for a Patagonia without Dams', community leaders will ride by horseback for 300 kilometers through areas that will be potentially affected by dams, and end in the regional capital of Coyhaique with a rally.

Purpose: To develop environmental education workshops for local fisher people and rural schools. The focus of the workshops will be to promote knowledge of biodiversity and the importance of conservation through hands-on learning.

Purpose: To recover the ancestral lands and natural resources of indigenous Mapuche Huilliche communities, by using GIS analysis and mapping to delineate indigenous territories. The results of this analysis will be available on the internet and will help to inform the organization's larger project of developing a sustainable management plan for recuperated lands.

Purpose: To fund a baseline study of maritime resources in the Sixth Region of Chile, in the hope of creating a special management area to conserve the ocean's natural resources. Related activities will involve joint projects with the local university and the municipality.

Purpose: Inti-Llanquiray works to confront socioeconomic discrimination against indigenous populations of the region, and to help them defend their cultural, land, and environmental rights. This grant funds construction of a meeting place for Inti-Llanquiray, and also supports refurbishing a local library and a small community radio station.

Purpose: To organize a series of panel discussions for communities affected by mining and dam projects and cellulose plantations. This is part of a larger campaign to extend the network of environmental grassroots organizations in Chile, in conjunction with the Network of Action for Social and Environmental Justice.

Purpose: This group grew out of concern over the deaths of black-necked swans in in a nature preserve because of effluents from a nearby cellulose pulp mill. The grant funds the creation of a network of communities in Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay that are affected by such mills.

Purpose: The Cosejo works with the Huascan people to protect their environment and health from threats posed by the mining industry. This grant supports educational campaigns opposing Barrick Gold's Pascua Lama project.

Purpose: La Coordinatora was created to articulate the concerns of the community of Alto del Carmen as it confronts internationally-funded mining projects. This grant will fund a meeting of mining-affected communities in Chile and the development of a strategy for mutual support and cooperation.

Purpose: This organization raises public awareness of the importance of Algarrobo's wetlands, which are vital for the integrity of the area's beaches, rivers, and flora and fauna. The grant supports establishment of a center where environmental activities can be organized and meetings can be held.

Purpose: Otaria works to promote sustainable development and the preservation of the environment through active participation of the public. This grant will support Otaria in building its public presence in the community and building relationships among local environmental and other organizations.

Purpose: To support a campaign to inform community members and tourists about the contamination of the Cruces River from a nearby cellulose plant.

Purpose: To fund a new nationwide network to promote environmental justice in Chile.
