Global Greengrants believes that grassroots climate justice movements evolve like living systems—adaptive, relational, and profoundly interdependent. They are less like top-down institutions and more like rivers finding their way, forests communicating underground, or starlings in murmuration: thousands of small, purposeful movements aligning into something far greater than the sum of their parts.
This is why we are honored to share the news of our renewed catalytic support from MacKenzie Scott, whose recent moving reflection on generosity and collective action mirrors what we witness every day across our network. Her words remind us that the forces shaping our future are not determined by any single leader, funder, or institution—but by the everyday acts of courage, care, and resistance offered by people in motion together, in service of each other.
In a moment when the world is confronting accelerating climate disasters, shrinking civic space, and the very real prospect of crossing irreversible warming thresholds, frontline communities already hold many of the answers we need. Their solutions are grounded in generations of ecological knowledge, collective care, and a vision for just futures. Yet these movements too often remain dangerously under-resourced. This gift is both a testament to their power and a reminder that far more is needed. When resources flow directly into the hands of grassroots leaders—women, Indigenous Peoples, youth, land and water defenders—their impact grows exponentially. This moment affirms their leadership and strengthens the broader ecosystem working toward a livable future for all.
This support is also an affirmation of the grassroots movements we serve and of the decentralized, advisory-led network we have strengthened over the years, which together with our partners enabled us to move $24.4 million through 2,000 grants across 125 countries in 2024 alone. It is a recognition of our entire network – movement partners, advisors, allies, funders, and friends – who have poured time, love, wisdom, resources, and commitment into weaving and expanding this global tapestry. Together, we have worked to shift power and resources toward climate justice movements.
While this gift strengthens our shared and essential work, moving timely resources to grassroots groups, supporting cross-regional solidarity, strengthening safety, care, and accompaniment, and filling gaps where philanthropy has historically failed to show up, it does not come close to meeting the scale of need and opportunity ahead. We carry this responsibility with humility and a commitment to direct these resources to areas of greatest need and possibility, while leveraging this moment to mobilize even more funding for the communities leading the way.
