Greengrants Makes its “Colorado Match”

2005 brought the rare opportunity of a matching grant for Greengrants. Roy Young, the founder of Nature’s Own Imagination and a longtime Greengrants supporter, issued a challenge grant to Global Greengrants, promising $100,000 if we could raise $200,000 from Colorado donors. This was a great chance to build significant support in our own backyard. We are thrilled to announce that we successfully completed the match and raised a combined total of over $300,000 from Colorado!

With this match, donors were able to leverage their gifts, and Greengrants had an exceptional opportunity to expand the impact of our work. A very sincere thank you to all who participated in the 2005 Colorado Match.

One final thanks to Roy for expanding the match in 2006 to any new donors who contribute over $1,000 or current donors who double their contribution.

Greengrants Organizes Panels on “Intuition in Grantmaking” and “Funding at the Edge”

Greengrants has been actively involved in promoting discussion of two issues in environmental philanthropy: the role of intuition in grantmaking and the importance of funding new and emerging groups and programs.

On the topic of intuition, panels and other discussions have focused on how intuition can be a complement to rigorous analysis and a resource for creative and effective grantmaking. Greengrants’ Director has participated in several panels on the subject, with another scheduled for the Council on Foundations Annual Meeting, May 7-9. Schedluled to join him are Nobel laureate and Green Belt Movement founder Wangari Maathai and Skoll Foundation President Sally Osberg.

The second panel, “Funding at the Edge,” concerns the need to fund innovative and emerging groups and programs. Panels on this topic also provide “how-to” information on identifying and working with new grantees around the world. One such session will also take place at the Council on Foundations Annual Meeting in May. Scheduled participants include Amalia Souza from Greengrant’s Alliance Fund CASA, Sarah Hobson of the New Field Foundation and Gara LaMarche of the Open Society Institute.
